Getting Your Sidel Lamps Right: From SBO to Matrix
If you’ve spent any time around Sidel blow molders, you know that keeping your heat profiles steady is a bit of a balancing act. Whether you’re running the old-school SBO lines or the newer Matrix series, just matching the wattage on a label isn’t enough. We build our replacement lamps to be true drop-ins. The goal is simple: make sure the thermal footprint is exactly what the original machine expects. The SBO vs. Matrix Headache When Sidel moved from the SBO to the Matrix, they didn’t just change the name. They changed the oven geometry and how power is distributed. That’s where things get tricky. If you’re pushing a high-output Matrix line, you need a lamp that hits the target temperature and stays there. No overshooting. We obsess over the filament density to make sure the IR wavelength is spot on. Why? Because “cold spots” in the preform are a nightmare. They lead to those annoying wall thickness variations in your bottles that make quality control a pain. The Nitty-Gritty: Quartz and Fit PET blowing is brutal on equipment. The rapid heating and cooling—that thermal cycling—will eat cheap glass for breakfast. That’s why we use high-purity quartz. And let’s talk about the fit. In this business, 2mm is the difference between a smooth install and a broken lamp. If the lamp is even slightly off, it puts stress on the ends and it’ll burn out way too soon. Ours slide right into the oven racks without you having to force them. Plus, the connectors are standard, so you can just wire them up and get back to work. A Few Things to Keep in Mind Here’s the thing about higher wattage lamps: they heat up faster, which sounds great. But they also put more strain on your power supply. If you decide to push the wattage past the original Sidel specs to squeeze out more speed, do your cooling fans a favor and check them first. If the oven housing gets too hot, your lamps won’t last. One last tip? Don’t just swap out a single burnt-out tube. It’s much better to replace the whole lamp bank. It keeps the heat distribution even across the preform and saves you from having to tweak your settings every five minutes.
